The Man, The Moustache, The Legend.
One of the biggest names in the history of cinema sadly passed away yesterday and it's hard to not get nostalgic. He was one of a rare breed who managed to toe the line between being a man's man, and a Hollywood heart-throb. A good ol' boy who done good, Burt will be best remembered for his charm, wisecracking and, of course, that iconic moustache.
Take a trip down memory lane with us, as we journey through some of his cinematic highlights, funniest quotes and ponder whether he'd have been a good Bond.
Burt Reynold's most critically acclaimed success came in 1997, where he starred alongside an all-star cast of Julianne Moore, Mark Wahlberg, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Of course, he shone brightest amongst them, and stole the show on his way to winning a Golden Globe and also an Oscar nomination.
The Longest Yard
So good they remade it twice. Vinnie Jones and Adam Sandler both wanted to be Burt (who didn't?!) but neither managed to quite recapture the magic. We all love an underdog story, and so the idea of a bunch of prisoners being given the opportunity to hit back at the authorities oppressing them will always be a recipe for success!
One of his earlier highlights was when Burt starred in Spaghetti Western, Navajo Joe. If we let you know that it involves Burt Reynolds and a group of bandits, you can probably piece together a lot of the story. It's a great ride though, and well worth seeing how Burt started off in cinema.
Some of Our Favourite Quotes
Famed for his sense of humour, Burt always had a cheeky soundbite tucked up his sleeve. It's no surprise given his dating record (Tammy Wynette , Faye Dunaway, Christ Evert and "love of his life" Sally Fields) that they often involved women. Enjoy
“Marriage is about the most expensive way for the average man to get laundry done.”
"There are no awards in Hollywood for being an idiot."
"If you hang onto something long enough, it will come back in style.. Like me."
“My acting is a bit like basketball. Most females in my films come off very well. I give great assist. And if I'm lucky, I even score.”
“Women are my drugs and alcohol. When I'm involved with one woman, I'm involved with one woman. Period. But between romances, I am carnivorous.”
What Could've Been...
Burt Reynolds was once the hottest name on the planet, and it comes as no surprise that he has had to turn down a lot of roles in his life. It may surprise you though that these include James Bond, Han Solo, John McClane, Michael Corleone, Taxi Driver and even Jack Nicholson's role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Sure he has regrets, but he won't mention them and it looks like he'll be taking them to the grave with him :D
