Simply Media has unearthed a couple of gems from Channel 4’s coveted archive, and both are available on DVD for the first time.
The Price and Buried were both applauded when first broadcast on TV. Boasting top British acting talent, including Lennie James, Peter Barkworth, Harriet Walter, Adrian Dunbar and Susana Reid, the two dramas delved into topical issues at the time. And continue to resonate today…
The Price: Complete Series (1985)
Two-time BAFTA winner Peter Barkworth leads the cast in this edgy and stylish political thriller about kidnapping and terror in Ireland at the height of The Troubles.
Barkworth stars as Geoffrey, a wealthy major player in the ‘80s’ growing computer industry. He has recently married a much younger woman, Frances (Harriet Walter), and will do anything to make her happy. This includes buying her the crumbling Georgian estate in County Wicklow where she grew up.
Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid stars as their daughter Rachel, in a rare acting role as a pre-teen. The Price was her first ever appearance on TV!
The family’s peaceful existence is torn apart when Frances and Rachel are kidnapped and held hostage for ransom by IRA terrorists. Adrian Dunbar stars as one of the terrorists, years before he played Superintendent Ted Hastings in Line of Duty. This series will have you on the edge of your seat!
Buried: The Complete Series (2003)
Lennie James has been in the headlines with his recent escapades as Morgan Jones on The Walking Dead, and recently on Sky alongside Suranne Jones, in Save Me.
Years before his current success, he also created a sensation in Buried, Channel 4’s gritty and hard-hitting mini-series about the UK prison system.
The drama gave us a rare insight into the daily lives of British prisoners, a bleak, mundane existence, peppered with drugs, sexual assault and suicide. Prison life in all its forms is presented at its most honest and extreme.
Lennie plays Lee Kingly, a man sentenced to ten years imprisonment. He was charged with GBH and firearms possession when he was only trying to protect his family. After his appeal is rejected, he is transferred to HMP Mandrake where he faces battles with fellow inmates and prison staff while fighting to prove his innocence.
In our exclusive interview Lennie talked to us about working on Buried, saying: “I have never worked as hard in my whole career as I did for the part of Lee Kingley… more than anything, it's something I'm very proud to have been a part of.”
