Mary Ellis, one of the last living female Spitfire pilots, has died. She was 101 years old, one year older than the RAF. Mary Ellis  She remembers having flown about 1000 aeroplanes during World War II. After the war she moved to the Isle of Wight, and took charge of Sandown Airport in 1950. The Spitfire has always been Ellis’s favourite plane. It was the plucky fighter that took on the might of the Luftwaffe – and won! "I love it, it's everybody's favourite," she said.
