Stunning documentary footage from a  key point in history from the world-famous British Pathe film archive

This hour-long documentary  looks at events in the extraordinary year of 1958.

A Year to Remember  draws together contemporary news footage  compiled  from the  British Pathe archive to chronicle the definitive events that occurred during the 20th century.

Pathe News set the industry standard for cinematic journalism, keeping audiences informed and entertained for the better part of a century with their newsreels. Their  film reels  not only documented the major political issues of the day, but social changes and cultural trends showing the way ordinary people lived their lives at the time.

Find out more about  British Pathe and their importance in keeping the public informed before television's invention  Here.

The year begins with the first Expo 58 since World War Two, also known as the Brussels World Fair. Post-war  celebration leads to the dawn of the "age of the teenager", as new-found freedom fuels expression, and as a result music and fashion trends.

In Rome, crowds  congregate  in St. Peter's Square to see the newly  appointed Pope Giovanni XXIII. Across the Atlantic, President Eisenhower outlines his  plan for peace  at the United Nations. And in Britain the Queen opens Gatwick Airport.

But tragedy also  strikes as the Munich air disaster leaves the sporting world  mourning when the plane carrying the Manchester United team crashed leading to the  death of the entire team aboard.
