Beethoven 250

2020 marks the 250 years since the birth of one of the world's most popular classical composers – Ludvig van Beethoven.

To celebrate Beethoven's birthday year, the BBC Proms and concert halls all over the world were going to resound this spring, but with live performances suspended by the coronavirus pandemic, now's the time to catch up with his celebrated symphonies, sonatas and concertos from the comfort and safety of your own home.

This collection of CDs and DVDs celebrates the maestro's music in all it's forms, conducted by some of the best, and performed all over the world by superb symphony orchestras.

Beethoven’s creative and musical life neatly divides into three phases - early, middle and late period.

One of his most famous pieces the ‘Moonlight Sonata’ came out of Beethoven’s early turbulent years. At the peak of his musical powers, Beethoven was prodigiously creative in his middle years, while the final years of his life were particularly tragic, and this is reflected in his music.

Together, these programmes explore the life, music and genius of one of the greatest composers who has ever lived.
