The Adventure Game Series 1-4 (DVD)
A nostalgic 80s celeb-fest! This cult BBC sci-fi quiz show is widely considered the spiritual precursor to The Crystal Maze
The zaniest quiz show you will encounter on this planet.
Often considered the main influence behind The Crystal Maze, this part-scripted galactic game show ran for nearly six years from 1980-1986.
Hugely popular with both children and adults alike the show was subsequently moved from its Saturday morning spot to early evening weekdays. It was even ranked at number 39 on Channel 4s 100 Greatest Kids TV Shows list!
Devised and later presented by veteran producer Patrick Dowling (Vision On, Why Dont You?), The Adventure Game combines elements of Dungeons ; Dragons with logic puzzles, escape rooms and a healthy dose of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Celebrity contestants and members of the public are whisked away to the planet Arg, where a mischievous race of shape shifting space dragons in human form called Argonds put them through their paces with a series of mind-boggling challenges in order to recover the ships crystal and escape.
Highlights include the Drogna game, a floor-tile maze of coded shapes and colours; a backwards-talking alien named Rongad (Bill Homewood) whose congratulatory cry Doogy rev!? became a catchphrase; slippery butler Gandor (Chris Lever); and the iconic Vortex game, where contestants have to cross a hexagonal lattice at a risk of being zapped into oblivion.
Other delights include Moira Stewart presenting the first series in her pre-newsroom jumpsuit before becoming one of the BBCs most famous newsreaders, and Lesley Judd switching from nimble visitor to The Mole tasked with deceiving the contestants.
Celebrity contestants on The Adventure Game include Keith Chegwin, Noel Edmonds, Fern Britton, Sue Cook, Elizabeth Estensen, Paul Darrow, John Craven, Bonnie Langford, Johnny Ball, James Burke and Graeme Garden, to name only a few. Even R2-D2s controller Kenny Baker (Star Wars) came on to play a pot plant!
All surviving episodes of this bonkers intergalactic befuddlement are collected here for the first time.*
Three episodes were lost in the BBC archive, and one is presented via a domestic recording.
Whether its your first visit to the mind-boggling planet Arg, or you're a frequent visitor, you'll soon be crying out "Doogy Rev" when your favourite team wins in this DVD collection of brain-busting brilliance!
