The Brothers Series 2 (DVD)
The second series of BBC's most popular drama series of the 1970s.
Originally broadcast in 1976, on BBC One's prime-time Sunday night spot,The Brothers quickly became one of the channel's most popular drama series of the decade. Created by Gerard Glaister (Secret Army / Colditz) and N. J. Crisp
Series 2 continues the dramatic story of the Hammond family and their lucrative family business Hammond Transport Services, following the departure of patriarch Robert Hammond, who died while secretly having an affair with his secretary.
Tensions run high when shares in the family business are split not just between the three brothers, but also, shockingly, with Robert's secretary Jennifer (Jennifer Wilson Z Cars). Each shareholder has a different idea on how the business should be run.
Edward (Patrick O'Connell Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself; David (Robin Chadwick Pride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested "second class honours, first class layabout" arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake); while Brian (Richard Easton Finding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Throw domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivers a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept fans devoted.
In this series, after being away on holiday recovering from her heart attack, Mary abruptly returns on Barbara's 18th birthday. Bill Riley catches an Australian man Carter surveying the land where Hammond Transport is located, and Jennifer's growing relationship with Edward is troubled by Mary's insistence that he should attend her welcome home dinner instead of Barbara's birthday party.
The brothers learn to their shock that distracted Edward hasn't finalised plans to acquire the surrounding property needed for crucial expansion of the firm, leading Carter to outbid them.
