Les Miserables (DVD)
BBC's original adaptation of Victor Hugo's celebrated French revolution novel from 1967
Starring Oscar-winner Frank Finlay
BBC's 10-part adaptation of the acclaimed Victor Hugo novel about the redemption of a former prisoner spanning three decades of his life during the backdrop of the French revolution first aired in black and white in 1967.
Jean Valjean (Frank Finlay) is a former convict failing to escape his past crimes, struggling to carry on living through a time of oppression, prejudice, injustice and revolution.
He tries a new life and adopts a new identity, but any chances of starting anew are tarnished by an encounter with his former prison guard Javert (Anthony Bate), who ruthlessly pursues him.
Alongside Jean Valjean are other characters struggling to get by during harsh times. Fantine (Michele Dotrice) is a single mother living in poverty after being abandoned by a rich lover, driven to desperate acts to provide for her young daughter. As their paths cross, and revolutionary violence begins to break out on Paris' streets, Jean Valjean begins an epic journey towards redemption and acceptance.
In 2019 BBC shall be releasing a new drama adaptation of Les Miserables for the first time since the 1967 classic, starring Olivia Colman, David Oyelowo and Dominic West, so now is the perfect time to re-visit the original.
