Great Irish Journeys: Complete Series (DVD)
BBC Radio 4 presenter Martha Kearney follows the footsteps of 19th century artist and geologist Georges Victor Du Noyer
Martha Kearney travels to her ancestral home of Ireland to follow in the footsteps of George Victor Du Noyer, visiting the places he travelled to and captured magnificently in his sketches and paintings.
Du Noyer spent 35 years tracing Ireland's people and buildings, and its gorgeous, rugged landscape. Martha Kearney finds out what Ireland's landscapes once looked like, and how they have changed, showing an intricate relationship between the people and the land.
Kearney introduces us to Du Noyer's work, and travels to the Bog of Allen, which sits between the Liffey and Shannon, and the Old Head of Kinsale in Co Cork.
Kearney journeys to Northern Ireland, focusing on the beauty of the region, from the rugged Giant’s Causeway in Antrim, to Mussenden Temple in Londonderry.
Kearney drops in on the sumptuously splendid Castletown House in Co Kildare and gazes at the glorious Rock of Cashel.
Kearney explores the Blasket Islands off the coast of Co Kerry, then on to the Dingle Peninsula, finally heading north to the islands of the Fermanagh Lakelands.
