Not As A Stranger (DVD)
Oscar-nominated 1955 MGM Film Noir classic about an ego-driven, aspiring physician coming to grips with his own imperfections, based on Morton Thompson's novel.
Directed by Oscar-nominee Stanley Kramer and written by Oscar-winner Edna Anhalt. Starring Olivia de Havilland, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra and Gloria Grahame.
Medical student Lucas Marsh (Mitchum) is a brilliant and dedicated physician, who has aspired to be a doctor since childhood. He is determined to succeed, and despite having no parents to help pay for his medical schooling, he marries a rich older nurse Kris (de Havilland) to help fund his training.
But his relentless idealism and intolerance of other's weaknesses while he is in pursuit of his high standards cause him to continually alienate all those around him. Lucas routinely looks down on all those doctors focused on making money, and ends up working in rural Greenville upon leaving medical school, a small town where many lack the means to pay for treatment.
But his perfectionism continues to be problematic, preventing him from sharing any kind of empathy with his patients, which eventually leads to disaster.
Based on the novel of the same name by Morton Thompson, which topped the 1954 list of bestselling novels for that year in the United States.
