Federico Fellini satire finds journalist Marcello Mastroianni putting his serious career aspirations aside to report on the shallow, jet-setting denizens of Rome. With Anita Ekberg and Anouk Aimee.
Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Federico Fellini’s epic satire of Roman decadence circa 1960 includes Anita Ekberg’s dance in the Trevi fountain, the exhausted striptease of the final moments and early performances from Anouk Aimee and future Velvet Underground singer Nico.
The plot focuses on the jet set adventures and hedonistic lifestyle of Marcello, a gossip columnist. Despite having to rush his girlfriend Emma to hospital following an overdose Marcello continues to pursue a number of different women, including wealthy heiress Maddalena and newly arrived movie starlet Sylvia, who Marcello shows some of Rome’s most picturesque tourist attractions to.
At the various parties and social gatherings that Marcello attends he appears to be equally attracted to and repelled by the ostentatious behaviour of the guests and the opulence present in the social circles that he finds himself in.
