The Brothers: Complete Collection (DVD)
The complete collection of BBC One's gripping boardroom drama series, one of the most popular soap operas of the 1970s.
The Brothers tells the enthralling story of the Hammond family. Their personal and business conflicts come to the surface as they try to work together and run the lucrative family firm Hammond Transport Services, following the death of family patriarch Robert Hammond.
Tensions run high when shares in the business are split not just between Robertthree brothers, but also, shockingly, with his secretary, Jennifer (Jennifer Wilson Z Cars), who it transpires Robert had been having an affair with. Each shareholder has very different ideas on how the business should be run going forward.
Edward (Patrick OConnell Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself; David (Robin Chadwick Pride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested "second class honours, first class layabout" arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake); while Brian (Richard Easton Finding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Add their domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivers a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept fans glued to their televisions!
Later down the line, the series introduced the memorable ruthless city banker Paul Merroney (Colin Baker Doctor Who). Voted the most hated man in Britain? by readers of the Sun while the series was on air, Merroney would stoop to anything to see the Hammondsusiness succeed. His equally ambitious rival Jane Maxwell (Kate Ora Doctor Who), the tough boss of an air freight business, also joined the cast. Fascinating fact for you: OMara and Bakers on-screen rivalry sparked off in The Brothers would continue in another face off, this time on the set of Doctor Who where Baker played the sixth incarnation of The Doctor and OMara was cast as evil Time Lady The Rani.
Broadcast between 1972-1976, on BBC Ones prime-time Sunday night slot, The Brothers quickly established itself as the BBCmost popular drama series of the decade. It quickly became Sunday night appointment TV in homes across the country. Now, for the first-time, fans of the long-running boardroom soap opera will be able to own the complete collection on DVD.
Join the Hammond family in this absorbing and addictive tale of family tragedy, financial struggle, secrets, lies and betrayal.
