From bad boy to cowboy to gladiator to soldier, Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas was not only a great actor but also a daring producer and a talented writer.
He worked with celebrated directors including Howard Hawks (The Captive), Vincent Minnelli (Lust for Life), Stanley Kubrick (Spartacus) and Elia Kazan (The Arrangement).
He will also be remembered and applauded for his stand during the McCarthy era, in which he helped to end the Hollywood blacklist.
