Join the renowned gardener Monty Don as he visits some breath-taking Islamic gardens in Spain, Iran, Morocco, India and Turkey, and learn about the history and significance of these magnificent gardens.
The presenter travels in search of paradise gardens referenced in the Koran, the holy book of Islam, as green spaces filled with flowers and fruit where shade and water provide a safe haven from the harsh climate that dominates the Arab world. Monty begins his quest in Spain, where he discovers their basic building blocks. In Morocco, he sees the wide variety of paradise gardens from an enormous royal walled meadow, to a secret inner city courtyard. Then in the Iranian desert, he uncovers the mystery to their creation.
In Turkey, Monty is dazzled by a display of the Ottoman Empire's favourite flower - the tulip - and learns of its sacred significance. At Topkapi palace, he sees how this sacred value was extended to all plants and landscapes in a way that created gardens that rejoiced in nature. Travelling to India, Monty encounters a new type of spirituality in the tomb gardens of the Mughal Empire, slips in a visit to the Taj Mahal, rides an elephant up to a spectacular Hindi fort and visits a Mughal pleasure garden. Back in the UK, he sets out to see how the concept of Paradise gardens have fared in places as varied as Bradford, Somerset and Highgrove, home of the Prince of Wales.
