The Hobbit (CD)
The classic BBC Radio 4 productions of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel
Tolkein's tale of hobbit Bilbo Baggins and one small man's big adventure is one of the greatest fantasy tales of all time, and a precursor to The Lord of the Rings.
Bilbo Baggins is a home-loving, sheltered and unambitious hobbit who has never left his village of The Shire. But that all changes when a wizard named Gandalf arrives and thrusts him into what would become the biggest adventure of his life.
Joined by a company of Dwarfs, Bilbo sets out on a journey across Middle Earth with the goal of defeating Smaug the Magnificant, a terrifying and greedy dragon guarding a hoard of treasure.
They face many perils on their quest, including trolls, goblins, and a run in with the mysterious creature named Gollum, but Bilbo's courage and resourcefulness inspires and surprises the entire company.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968, this set of dramatisations has become a classic in its own right, perfectly showcasing Tolkein's magical world.
