Starring Oscar-winner Frank Finlay as Jean Valjean, and Michele Dotrice as Fantine.
BBCs 10-part adaptation of the acclaimed Victor Hugo novel about the redemption of a former prisoner across three decades surrounding the French revolution. The black & white drama series first aired in 1967.
Jean Valjean (Frank Finlay) is a former convict failing to escape his past crimes, struggling to carry on living through a time of oppression, prejudice, injustice and revolution.
He adopts a new identity, but any chances of starting afresh are tarnished by an encounter with his former prison guard Javert (Anthony Bate), who ruthlessly pursues him.
Alongside Jean Valjean numerous other characters struggle to survive in these harsh times.
Fantine (Michele Dotrice) is a single mother living in poverty after being abandoned by a rich lover, driven to desperate acts to provide for her young daughter.
As their paths cross, and revolutionary violence begins to break out on the streets of Paris, Jean Valjean begins an epic journey towards redemption and acceptance.
The BBCs latest adaptation of Les Miserables, starring Olivia Colman, David Oyelowo and Dominic West, is proving to be a huge hit with audiences, particularly those who are unfamiliar with epic. Now is the perfect time to re-visit the original 10-part series, which is a more in-depth treatment of the Victor Hugo classic.
