Set in 1986, Rummidge. A horrid, sprawling city in the heart of the midlands, ruined by motorways. Thatcherism has been working its magic, and the recession has hit.
At Rummidge University, suffering from the latest rounds of budget cuts, the University is in dire need to cast off its ivory-tower image, and attempts to by entering the Industry Year Shadow Scheme.
Robyn Penrose (Haydn Gwynne) is selected by the University as their representative. She's a young, idealistic lecturer in English Literature, and an expert on the Victorian industrial novel.
Having moved straight from school into academia, she's never set foot in a factory, until now. She finds herself shadowing Vic Wilcox (Warren Clarke), the middle-aged, self-made managing director of a Rummidge engineering firm.
The idea of following his every move one day a week for the next six months is a nightmare to Robyn. And Vic is equally hostile. But over time, they find themselves becoming fond of each other.
