Based on the memoirs of tournament chess player John Healy, also named The Grass Arena, and shown as a part of BBC's Screen Two series.
Raised by an abusive father in a strict, religious family, young John Healy (Mark Rylance, is forced to learn how to defend himself. He starts to learn boxing, but what looked to be a promising career was destroyed by alcoholism.
His boxing ambitions in tatters, and now homeless, John spends his days living in a park for homeless alcoholics called The Grass Arena. There his life further descends down a hopeless spiral of drink, drugs, and consequently crime, which lands himself in prison.
But John's life is transformed from watching fellow inmates playing chess. Transfixed and intrigued, he learns how to play and begins to show extraordinary ability at the game. Chess changes his life as he works towards a path of redemption.
