The Ascent of Man has been named one of the best pieces of work ever produced by the BBC. Dr Jacob Bronowski looks at how the use of scientific imagination through history has shaped the life of man. This BBC DVD documentary was produced during what some people have called a "Golden Age", giving us a fabulous insight into the ascent of man through the ages.
In 1969 Jacob Bronowski was commissioned by the now much loved David Attenborough, who at the time was the Controller of BBC2, to write and present this 13-part documentary. The series observes and inspects in great depth, whilst providing us with trusted expertise, the intellectual and technological history of the human race from prehistoric times, right through to the 20th Century.
The Ascent of Man was not broadcast until much after the original concept was devised, four years later in 1973. The series was conceptually designed to complement Kenneth Clarke's earlier documentary 'Civilisation' also aired on the BBC, Bronowski focuses upon the progressive development of human science and technology, of the ways in which humanity seeks to harness and dominate its environment, and the ways in which scientific and intellectual theory across the ages, from Galileo to Einstein, have broadened our horizons.
