Four time Oscar-winner Robert Wise directs his first colour feature in this wartime drama.

Starring Richard Widmark and Don Taylor.

Robert Wise (best known for directing The Sound of Music and West Side Story) turns his attention to World War II in the amazing and true story of Uncle Sam's "Sailors on Camels" who fought their way out of the sands of Mongolia.

In 1944, Cheif Boatswain's Mate Sam McHale (Richard Widmark) joins a group of US military meteorologists to serve at the weather station, monitoring the conditions for the Navy in Inner Mongolia during WWII.

Their commanding officer killed during a Japanese attack on Mongolia, McHale must take control and lead the men on a 800-mile trek in harsh and intense conditions in the Gobi Desert to their safety.

When their convoy is attacked by the Japanese, they are forced to find help from a group of Mongol tribesmen.
