BBC's Great Expectations - Charles Dickens (1967) (DVD)
The engrossing 1967 BBC production of Dickens' twisted tale of a poor orphan raised into wealth, then humbled by pride and love
"Ask no questions, and you'll be told no lies."
Young Philip Pirrip (Christopher Guard) (known as Pip) encounters escaped convict Magwitch (John Tate) in an abandoned graveyard. Pip helps him find food and escape his shackles. Pip's kindness is later rewarded by an unexpected inheritance. But as an adult Pip (Gary Bond), surrounded by home comforts, grows mean and arrogant, and smitten with the aloof Estella (Francesca Annis).
Maxine Audley plays the vindictive recluse Miss Havisham, who has raised Estella to distrust all men after being jilted herself at the alter on her wedding day. Neil McCarthy and Richard O'Sullivan are Pip's friends Joe Gargery and Herbert Pocket; and Peter Vaughan is the fearsome lawyer Jaggers. The cast also includes Hannah Gordon as Pip's confidante Biddy, Norman Scace as Joe's pompous uncle Pumblechook, Shirley Cain as Pip's fiery sister Georgiana, and Ronald Lacey as the shadowy Orlick.
Written by Hugh Leonard, who adapted many of Dickens' books for the BBC and the stage. This is a delightful cautionary tale of the power of wealth to corrupt.
