Le Corbeau is a classic noir is essential viewing from director Henri-Georges Clouzot whose often regarded as the "French Hitchcock". This crime drama follows a story in the small town of St Robin when a series of poison-pen letters signed 'Le Corbeau' appear denouncing several prominent members of society causing a wave of hysteria.
When the town's respectful and calm surface is stripped away, a darker side is revealed and a series of crimes leads to a epidemic where everyone becomes a suspect. With the towns people afraid to outwardly accuse each other for fear of being accused themselves, suspicion and hatred soon reach dangerous levels.
This cinematic masterpiece is a dark and subversive study of human nature starring Pierre Fresnay and Ginette Leclerc. The controversial film was condemned by both the political left and right, along with the church upon its release and resulted in Clouzot being banned from making films for the two years following its release.
