Out-Blitzing the Blitzkrieg (Great Tank Battles of World War 2) [DVD]
The final episode sees the Germans on the retreat, and the Allies are able to successfully implement Operation Husky - the landing on Sicily - where Field Marshal Montgomery and the American General George Smith Patton ousted the Germans in a little over five weeks. On the Eastern Front General Zhukov inflicts heavy defeats on the Germans, as he now has the new T-54 available. After D-Day the role of tank and Panzer becomes significant again. Here is yet another confrontation between Rommel and Montgomery, at least until the former's suicide a month later, forced by the accusation of participating in the assassination attempt on Hitler. The outstanding armoured commander on the Western Front was now General Patton, who broke through the German defences and made fast track across France, out-blitzing the inventors of the Blitzkrieg. Though the Allies had, largely, the upper hand, the German Panzer was still a formidable enemy, and they did manage to mount a significant counter-offensive, the Battle of the Bulge, that took the Allies completely by surprise. However, this was to be the last major Panzer-tank confrontation of the war - Germany's ultimate defeat was now inevitable.
