Pickwick - Butteriss, Higgins, Keeble, St (CD)
523047
The first successful musical adaptation of one of Dickens’s stories, is delightful and fun-filled.
Mr Pickwick is sung by Simon Butteriss, Mrs Bardell by Gaynor Keeble, and the Baker, Mr Pickwick’s rival in Mrs Bardell’s affections, by Toby Stafford-Allen.
The companion work, Cups and Saucers of 1876, was written, composed and performed by George Grossmith (1847-1912), best known for his origination of many of the Gilbert and Sullivan patter roles, but a talented composer and writer in his own right.
It is a delicious little satire on the British obsession with Oriental china and may have helped inspire The Mikado. Simon Butteriss sings General Deelah and Gaynor Keeble sings Mrs Nankeen Worcester. Both works are directed from the keyboard by Stephen Higgins.
The sleeve booklet contains the full librettos, as well as essays by David Chandler, Kurt Gänzl and Simon Butteriss putting the operettas in context. We ship worldwide - please contact us directly if you are outside the UK and are having difficulty buying the CD.
