Different teaching approaches clash as the emphatic Mrs. Kay (Jean Heywood) and disciplinarian Mr. Briggs (Alun Armstrong) supervise a coach trip of chaotic children from an inner-city Liverpool school.
In this hilarious romp showing what happens if you let a bunch of naughty schoolkids off the leash for the day on a trip to Conwy Castle in Wales. Stopping off at a sweet shop, the zoo, a beach and a funfair along the way, the children take every opportunity to attempt to cause havoc.
Filmed on located with a cast made up of untrained child actors, to add to the chaos, Our Day Out is a riotous celebration of youth and what it is like to be 14 and free from school.
Although a comedy at heart, it also provides commentary on the bleak and hopeless lives of poor and un-educated children living in Britain.
This emotional comedy was directed by 1996 BAFTA winner Pedr James (Our Friends in the North), and draws on creator Willy Russell's own experiences on school trips both as a youth, and supervising them as a teacher. It was later adapted for stage, and is still a regular school text.
