The Brothers Series 7 BBC (DVD)
ONE OF THE BBC'S MOST POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL DRAMA SERIES. THE FINAL SERIES OF THE HAMMOND FAMILY SAGA SEES THE HAULAGE FIRM IN EVER GREATER PERIL.
Originally broadcast in 1976, on BBC One's prime-time Sunday night spot, The Brothersquickly became one of the channel's most popular drama series of the decade. Created byGerard Glaister (Secret Army / Colditz) and N. J. Crisp
Series 7 continues the dramatic story of the Hammond family and their lucrative family business 'Hammond Transport Services', following the departure of patriarch Robert Hammond, who died while secretly having an affair with his secretary.
Tensions run high when shares in the family business are split not just between the three brothers, but also, shockingly, with Robert's secretary Jennifer (Jennifer WilsonZ Cars). Each shareholder has a different idea on how the business should be run.
Edward (Patrick O'Connell Fraud Squad) is a no nonsense, well-paid accountant who feels he was most qualified to run the whole business by himself; David (Robin ChadwickPride and Prejudice (1967)) is a disinterested "second class honours, first class layabout" arts graduate and playboy with a glamorous girlfriend (Gabrielle Drake); while Brian (Richard EastonFinding Forrester) is a dull accountancy wizard with a controlling wife. Throw domineering mother Mary (Jean Anderson The Railway Children) in to the mix and The Brothers delivers a winning formula of power struggles and family feuding that kept fans devoted.
Doctor Who fans can also rejoice at the return of Colin Baker as ruthless city banker Paul Merroney, and the equally ambitious Jane Maxwell (Kate O'Mara) to continue their business rivalry.
As the merger with Van der Merwe is sealed, Paul Merroney (Colin Baker) ties the knot with banker's daughter April (Liza Goddard - Woof!), but the honeymoon is soon over as Merroney puts business deals before romance. As Merroney plans expansion into the Middle East, a bereavement reveals his true colours.
David (Robin Chadwick) tenders his resignation as the Hammonds unite in opposition to Merroney's latest machinations. Mary leads a last-ditch battle to keep the company under family control, but the writing is on the wall as she attends the annual Christmas party and discovers changes that run deeper than she ever imagined.
With gripping boardroom drama, unlike anything you'll find on television today, family tragedy, financial struggles, secrets and betrayal, this is a series that will be welcomed by all fans of The Brothers and soap operas.
