Director Fred Schepisi adapted Thomas Keneally’s Australian novel set in the early 20th century.

Jimmie is a mixed-race Australian Aborigine who suffers discrimination. Torn between his Aboriginal roots and his upbringing by by Methodist minister Reverend Neville.

Despite his strong work ethic, Jimmie faces discrimination with numerous employers.

Following an affair with Gilda, a white servant girl, the pair decide to get married when she becomes pregnant.

However, the arrival of his aboriginal relatives brings pressure from his new employer, who doesn't want the men on his land.

Pushed over the edge Jimmie decides to retaliate with tragic consequences.
