Play for Today: The Fishing Party (DVD)
Peter Terson's comedy of class and manners starring Brian Glover, Ray Mort, Douglas Livingstone, John Comer and Jane Freeman.
First shown on BBC One in 1972 as a part of the Play for Today series. Written by Peter Terson (Village Hall / Crown Court) and directed by BAFTA-winner Michael Simpson (Prince Regent).
Art (Brian Glover), Ern (Ray Mort) and Abe (Douglas Livingstone) are Derbyshire miners out on a men-only fishing holiday.
Checking into a run-down B&B run by strong-willed landlady Audrey (Jane Freeman) and her subservient husband, the three are conned into paying more than their rooms are worth.
The trio board a boat piloted by an ex-fisherman, who grimly warns of the dangers of mixing brown ale and chips on the sea. But the boys ignore his warnings, and are already tiddly before they've even left the harbour, and are completely off-colour by the time they reach the cod grounds to fish.
