She’s not a conventional detective. She’s somewhat shambolic, has a dowdy appearance and is a complex loner who is partial to a drink and is obsessive about work. Her long-suffering sidekick is Joe Ashworth, who is sometimes lashed out at by Vera’s cruel tongue.
