Story of Dunkirk
Just before 7pm on May 26th, Prime Minister Winston Churchill authorised 'Operation Dynamo' to commence. By the end of the operation on June 4th, 338, 226 Belgian, French and British soldiers had been rescued by a hastily assemble fleet of over 800 boats. The rescue was necessary because the British Expeditionary Force had gone to assist its ally France but was overwhelmed by the speed and ferocity of the German advance.
Battle of Britain
By the end of June, 1940, we stood alone. France had surrendered. Nazi Germany and her allies had succeeded in conquering the rest of Europe from Norway to Sicily. As both sides drew breath, Hitler ordered his military to forced a British surrender by whatever means possible. Ahead lay a long hot summer as a battle for national survival was fought in the skies over Britain in full view of the population.
WWII D-Day Landings
In the early hours of June 6th, 1944, Allied forces began the greatest military assault ever attempted. They came to Normandy by both air and sea with one objective: to get a toehold on the continent and from there, begin the long campaign that would result in the liberation of Europe. And, the end of the Second World War.
